Becoming a Little Resurrecter

My mom is one of the greatest people that I know. She is one of those people that genuinely cares, and has a thirst for life that is unmatched.

She also has a thirst for knowing what is going on in my life.

She recently asked me why my Facebook page, under the “Religion” category it simply read, “Resurrection.”

“Why wouldn’t you write ‘Christian,’ or ‘follower of Christ?’ she asked. And I thought back and remembered why I had done this. I remembered it was at a time where I was a senior in high school, a gung-ho rebel Christian angry at the established Christendom system. But maybe in my foolish anger I was on to something.

You see the resurrection of Jesus is what I believe to be the most critical moment in all of human history. The enemy that plagues humanity, the looming and unrelenting force of death was forever defeated. It demonstrated that things that were dead could be brought back to life, that they could be resurrected.

I think one of the most invigorating things about the resurrection, beyond the hope it brings and the joy it creates is that this one event allows us and inspires us to be little resurrecters. Things that appear to be defeated and dead can be brought back to life. Here is where I have seen resurrection:

1.     People hopelessly oppressed by the Empires and power structures are resurrected and transformed by the news the God is now king.

2.     Ratty and abandoned places turned into churches.

3.     A forgotten neighborhood in the badlands of north Philly turned into a place defined by healing and creativity.

4.     Old T.V.’s turned into pots for plants.

5.     Broken relationships severed by dishonesty, manipulation and abuse are restored.

6.     CFO’s set on the pursuit of power and money become resources for the God’s kingdom.

7.     Lost hurting souls become resurrected into vibrant and healthy people.

Resurrection doesn’t create new things; it simply reuses and transforms things in new and better ways. One day, all things will be made new and all things will be restored. In the mean time I just want to be a little resurrecter. I want to join in on the process of making all things new.

I’ll start with this blog. I’ll take this worn out and dead thing and bring it back to life. What are you resurrecting? What in your life are you restoring and bringing back to life?
